Custom 4G and GNSS Antenna Design for a Smart Battery Pack

Project Background

A new energy mobility company contacted RF Link Antenna while developing a smart battery pack for a battery swapping system. The battery pack needed to support both cellular communication and GNSS positioning, allowing the platform to track battery assets, monitor operating status, and manage location-based information.

During the early stage of the project, standard antenna products were evaluated. However, once the antenna was placed inside the sealed battery pack structure, the wireless performance did not meet the customer’s expectations. The metal parts, compact internal space, and protective enclosure all created challenges for signal transmission.

To solve this problem, RF Link Antenna developed a custom 4G and GNSS antenna solution based on the customer’s battery pack structure, outdoor working environment, and long-term reliability requirements.

RF Challenges in Smart Battery Pack Applications

Smart battery packs are not easy environments for antenna integration. Unlike ordinary consumer devices, battery systems usually contain a dense mechanical structure, metal components, battery cells, control boards, sealing materials, and reinforced housing.

These elements can strongly affect antenna performance. Metal structures may block or absorb RF energy, while the compact layout limits the available antenna placement area. At the same time, the product must meet practical requirements such as waterproof protection, vibration resistance, durability, and daily outdoor operation.

For this project, the customer needed two wireless functions in one compact platform: stable 4G communication and reliable GNSS positioning. The antenna design had to support remote data transmission, asset tracking, and location reporting while fitting into the sealed battery structure.

A standard antenna was not enough for this type of application. The project required a customized RF design that could balance signal performance, mechanical integration, environmental protection, and long-term use reliability.

Our Customized Antenna Solution

RF Link Antenna developed an integrated communication and positioning antenna solution for the smart battery pack.

For 4G cellular communication, our engineering team designed a compact internal antenna structure that matched the battery pack layout and supported efficient integration inside the enclosure. For GNSS positioning, we provided a customized antenna configuration and optimized the antenna location, cable route, and installation method to improve positioning stability.

From the beginning of the project, we focused on the real product environment rather than treating the antenna as an isolated component. Our team reviewed the internal layout, metal enclosure, waterproof structure, feed path, cable routing, and available installation space.

Based on these conditions, we adjusted the antenna position and matching performance to reduce signal loss caused by nearby metal parts and the sealed housing. The goal was to help the battery pack maintain stable communication and positioning performance after final assembly.

The final solution was designed for demanding field use. It supported better integration between the antenna system, battery structure, waterproof design, and communication platform.

Project Results

With the customized 4G and GNSS antenna solution, the customer was able to complete device testing and platform integration more smoothly.

The smart battery pack achieved more stable remote communication and more reliable location reporting in real operating conditions. Compared with the earlier standard antenna approach, the customized design reduced repeated hardware adjustments during later development and gave the customer a more suitable RF solution for battery swapping applications.

This project shows why smart battery packs and battery swapping systems often need custom antenna engineering. When cellular communication, GNSS positioning, sealing, vibration resistance, and structural durability all need to work together, antenna selection becomes more than a simple component choice.

Why Smart Battery Packs Need Custom Antenna Design

For battery swapping systems, wireless communication and positioning are closely linked to daily operation. The platform may need to know where each battery pack is, whether it is online, how it is being used, and whether its operating status is normal.

However, the battery pack itself creates a difficult RF environment. The antenna must work near metal structures, inside a sealed enclosure, and under outdoor usage conditions. These factors can affect signal strength, positioning accuracy, and long-term communication stability.

A custom antenna solution allows the antenna to be designed around the actual battery pack structure. This helps improve integration efficiency, reduce signal loss, and support more reliable communication and GNSS positioning in real applications.

RF Link Antenna provides custom antenna design and manufacturing support for smart battery packs, battery swapping systems, energy storage devices, IoT terminals, and new energy mobility platforms. From structure evaluation and antenna design to RF tuning, testing, and production delivery, we help customers develop antenna solutions that match both wireless performance goals and mechanical design requirements.
